We know that a meat-based diet contributes to global warming because of methane released by animal waste, which also pollutes water and crops with run-off. But industrial live-stock farming also uses a lot of fuel to transport those animals to slaughter, and then to the butchers, and then to the stores.



Factory Farms Near You!
Once upon a time, only a decade or so, it wasn't hard to know where factory hog farms were because they were nearly all in North Carolina. But since those days, the practice of crowding together huge concentrations of animals ? hogs, poultry, dairy cows, beef cattle ? in the interests of supposed efficiency has spread around the country.

Wherever it appears, factory farming has two notable effects. It threatens the environment, because of huge concentrations of animal manure and lax regulation. And it threatens local political control. Residents who want a say over whether and where factory farms, whose stench can be overwhelming, can be built find their voices drowned out by the industry's cash and lobbying clout.

These farms are spreading so rapidly that it's been hard to get an accurate, up-to-date picture of where they all are. A research and advocacy group called Food and Water Watch has released an interactive map ? www.factoryfarmmap.org

LIVE EARTH: an educational success

Right now a brutal heat wave is attacking the United States with record highs, growing drought conditions, and growing wildfire threat, all due to global warming.

We're changing the chemistry of the planet by pumping 70 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere everyday, on top of all of the other toxic chemicalsn we release into the environment.

Here is a problem that's all about time. We have as little as ten years to act, according to many scientists, the majority of which believe global warming is human-caused. (All credible scientists agree the planet is warming, evident by records.) The only ones who now argue against the science of the crisis are "scientists" on the payroll of ExxonMobile and the other big polluters and contributors of CO2 gases.

If we don't act now by conserving our power and resources, the future of both humanity and wildlife will suffer.

Live Earth, Vice President Al Gore's mega-music festival was a success in pushing this issue to the top of the priority list. The first ever eco-friendly, carbon-neutral concerts in history helped launch the largest climate change education campaign ever. Live Earth exposed over Two billion people to the facts and horrors of global warming pollution. I think we will look back on this event and see it as a real push in momentum for our mission in the battle against global warming and pollution of the environment. Never before have so many people come together for the environment. It was the biggest music event in history, but it was also the biggest environmental event in history. The young viewers will never forget the messages and images they were exposed to. While the event won't change our society over-night, especially the older generation set in their ways, Live Earth was a wonderful small step in the right direction.

Kudos to all of the awesome short-film makers who educated the audience with so many important facts.

Kudos to the band AFI for mentioning their vegetarianism and veganism, which does help allieviate the global warming problem.

Kudos to Melissa Etheridge for her Al Gore salute and for bringing to tears to our eyes during her passionate performance.

Kudos to all of the bands and musicians and celebrities who took part. This really will matter to the young generation.

Kudos to Al Gore for his persistence in getting this message out to everyone.


“We are going to ask the two billion people estimated to be in the audience Saturday to take a seven-point pledge that is designed to change behavior and also to put pressure on political leaders in every country across the ideological spectrum,” Gore said. “We really have to solve this.”

Although all the major candidates in both the Republican and Democratic parties have expressed concerns about global warming, Gore said climate change must rank high on the next president’s list of priorities.

“It’s 500 days off,” Gore said of the Democrats’ convention. “If I do my job, then all of them will make this their top issue. None of them have yet.”
